Different Types of Binge Eating - Causes and Treatment

Of all the variety of symptoms that can accompany eating disorders, one that can be associated with several of them is the common pattern of binge eating. Whether the person restricts their food habits or not, certain mental or emotional triggers can make them begin eating excessively to the point of discomfort and sickness. There are different types of binge eating but often the episode of overeating is something that they lose control of and suffer negative consequences as a result of their behavior. The binges may occur at certain times and be more predictable such as with night eating disorder. This is a disorder in which, for whatever reason, the person feels unable to control their eating habits at night. It could happen because of insomnia or restrictive eating habits during the day. It is a type of binge eating that can affect a person's health and weight because of their uncontrolled eating.

The problems that contribute to compulsive overeating are not just the food itself; it is an obsession with food as an emotional escape from circumstances of life. For the people that eat large portions and snack often, they can admit to knowing that they eat not out of hunger but out of boredom, depression or just the taste of food. This can be a cycle that this difficult for them to really escape without professional help. They have become so dependent on food to ease their nerves and stress that they do not know how to function without it. They see food not as a source of survival but as something that they want all the time.

Whatever type of binge disorder a person might have, their need to binge is usually a kind of coping mechanism that helps them to escape from other problems. With eating disorders like bulimia, compulsive overeating or night eating disorder, it is not just a matter of an obsession with food; there are other psychological issues at hand that are not being addressed. Traumatic events of the past or problems with abuse can trigger any kind of eating disorder. In order to treat their binging problems the person with the disorder must think of the past and try to pinpoint when and why their issues with food began to occur. Once they understand exactly why they behave in this way then they might be more likely to think before they engage in binging behavior. The more time they spend facing their emotional problems head on instead of escaping through food they less they are going to binge eat.

What Is Irritable Bowel Syndrome and What Causes It?

Is IBS a Disease like Crohn's or Inflammatory Bowel Disease?

Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, is a functional disorder of the gastrointestinal tract. It is not a disease like Crohn's or inflammatory bowel disease.

Symptoms vary widely from person to person, but they may include some of the following:

• Abdominal pain, sometimes localized to lower left quadrant
• Bloating
• Diarrhea
• Constipation
• Alternating diarrhea/constipation
• Change in stool consistency or appearance
• Mucous in stool
• Feeling of incomplete evacuation after bowel movements
• Sunset onset of uncontrollable urges to have bowel movements
• Excess gas
• Pain when sitting down
• Excess gurgling/rumbling/growling in stomach and abdomen
• Nausea and vomiting
• Burping
• Loss of appetite
• Unpleasant taste in mouth
• Heartburn
• Backache
• Lethargy
• Anxiety and/or depression
• Insomnia
• Heart palpitations
• Irritable bladder or incontinence
• Gynecological problems

As you can see, it is a long list. Many of the symptoms can be caused by other illnesses or conditions. Please do not self-diagnose. See your doctor - or several, if necessary - until you have a specific diagnosis.

If you experience any of the following, get to the hospital or see a doctor immediately. They are NOT symptoms of IBS:

• High temperature
• Blood in stool or fresh bleeding with bowel movements
• Constant, unrelenting pain

Most experts agree that IBS does not cause permanent damage or lead to more serious conditions such as cancer or inflammatory bowel disease.

What Causes IBS?

After talking to several doctors, nurses, and a dietician, I received no answer to this question. There is nothing definitive on the Internet, either. However, criteria have been established that help physicians diagnose irritable bowel syndrome. Called the Rome III Criteria, you can get more information at RomeCriteria.org.

The average patient sees three doctors over three years before finally receiving a proper diagnosis.

The criteria for irritable bowel syndrome are outlined below.

• Recurrent abdominal pain or discomfort at least three days per month in the last six months, associated with two or more of the following:

- Improvement with defecation

- Onset associated with a change in frequency of stool

- Onset associated with a change in form (appearance) of stool

It is important to obtain a specific diagnosis before you assume that you have IBS. Other diseases may cause similar symptoms, and they must be ruled out before making any assumptions. There is no diagnostic test available (yet) that can prove you have irritable bowel syndrome. However, extensive examinations can rule out other, more serious conditions such as celiac disease, bowel cancer, and Crohn's.

Other Conditions that May Affect People with IBS

According to recent research, those with IBS may also suffer from one or more of the conditions on the following list:

• Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS)
• Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)
• Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS)
• Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ)
• Restless leg syndrome (RLS)
• Reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD)
• Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)
• Periodic limb movement (PLMS)
• Multiple chemical sensitivity syndrome (MCSS)
• Tension headaches
• Irritable bladder
• Primary dysmenorrhea
• Migraine headaches
• Vulvodynia

There may also be an overlap of conditions such as:

• Globus
• Functional chest pain
• Functional heartburn
• Functional dysphagia
• Functional dyspepsia
• Aerophagia
• Functional vomiting
• Rumination syndrome
• Functional abdominal bloating
• Functional constipation
• Functional diarrhea
• Functional abdominal pain
• Gall bladder dysfunction
• Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction
• Functional fecal incontinence
• Functional anorectal pain
• Functional defecation disorders

Functional disorders do not produce abnormal test results and nothing unusual is seen on endoscopy or x-ray. These disorders are generally diagnosed by deciding what they are NOT, and then categorizing them by symptoms.

Chronic Cystitis - Symptoms and Causes

For some reasons unknown, some women get bladder infections repeatedly. This is called chronic cystitis. According to Dr. Robert Pugach, a Medical Director at Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center, the main key in preventing infections is urinating. Urinating several times daily prevents bladder infections by flushing bacteria out of the urethra.

Contact a urology doctor in your area if you are having any of these symptoms.

Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

Bacterial infections affect the lower and upper urinary tract. The lower urinary tract infection is considered a simple cystitis (bladder infection). These symptoms consist of:

Painful urinationFrequent urinationUrge to urinateLower abdominal pain and pressureUrine is cloudy, dark or smells strong

Symptoms of upper urinary tract infection technically recognized as pyelonephritis (kidney infection):

Back pain under the side ribs where the kidneys are locatedFever and chillsNausea and vomitingAlong with the symptoms of a bladder infection

Causes of UTIs

Women are more prone to UTIs because the urethra in women is shorter than the urethra in men. The urethra is the tube that carries the urine from your bladder to the outside of your body. Germs get into your system through the urethra. The germs commonly causing infection is the ones found in your stool. These germs come from wiping from back to front and gets inside the urethra, then travels to the bladder and possibly the kidneys. If left untreated, may lead to serious health risks or fatality. Other causes of UTIs should be taken into consideration:

Sex can push germs into the urethraNot drinking enough waterIf you have diabetesIf you are pregnantDehydrationLack of good personal hygiene

Another cause of chronic cystitis is a decrease in estrogen. It is possible for one to experience chronic UTI symptoms without actually having a bladder infection. This hormonal change causes vaginal tissue to decrease and the urethra to narrow. Urethral changes can affect the bladder with continuing inflammation and bladder muscle irritation.

Dr. Pugach, has treats many female patients who are diagnosed with UTIs. Although their urine cultures are negative, and show red and white blood cells but no bacteria, the patient is still prescribed antibiotics. Unfortunately, the treatment is short-term relief of the symptoms before returning within a month. Typically, this is a very discouraging, as it is chronic.

At Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center, Dr. Pugach, specializes in many bladder control problems in women and treats this circumstance with an in office procedure. This procedure gently stretches and brings the urethra back to its original size and only takes about two minutes. To soften the urethra, estrogen cream is used and antibiotics are prescribed to help heal the bladder. After the procedure, patients may experience a mild burning sensation while urinating for about 1-2 days. Shortly after, the symptoms of UTI will dissipate.

Gastritis is a functional abnormality of the stomach characterized by various symptoms, with pain, or heartburn, indigestion and heartburn, the most common. Gastritis may be acute or chronic.

In the first case they are older and manifest themselves through phases in which the symptoms are more pronounced and, in acute, occur due to causes more recent, as a share of drugs in the gastric mucosa, poisoning, poor nutrition and others.

What Causes Diseases? The Answer Is Simpler Than You Think

Countless nations and governments have spent billions of dollars trying to figure out what causes diseases. They have hired expert researchers to figure out why we're getting sick and how to prevent it.

What they don't realize is that there are just four reasons for any health condition out there.

That's right. Just four causes for any sickness or disease you can possibly name.

It doesn't even matter if it's heart problems, bloating, headaches, depression, cancer, heart burn, asthma, frequent colds, flu or anything else.

One or more of the four things I'll tell you about cause all of them.

So, here's the short list for you:

Nutritional deficiencies

Your body gets sick because it doesn't get enough of what it needs. Think about it, if you don't nourish your body like you should, it'll be unable to fight diseases off, just like you'd be unable to protect yourself if you're starving to death.

It's common knowledge, isn't it?

Toxins

You might not realize it, but you're surrounded by toxins (man-made as well as nature-made) twenty four hours a day.

The chemicals you use to clean your house are full of toxins that you then breathe in.

The food you get at your local supermarket is stuffed with toxic substances you eat.

The hygiene products you use to stay clean are overflowing with toxins that access your blood stream about thirty seconds after you put them on your skin.

Even the drugs you get at the drug store are toxic.

Toxins are everywhere...
... and they will cause your immune system to be impaired and susceptible to disease and sickness.

Electro Magnetic Fields

If you really want to know what causes diseases, you can't ignore EMF's. We're all surrounded by them.

Electro magnetic waves come from radio towers, cell phones, wireless Internet devices, GPS systems, microwaves...
... pretty much anything that communicates wirelessly with another device or uses those waves to heat up your food will harm you.

Obviously, you can't see electro magnetic fields and so, everyone will tell you that your cell phone, for example, is completely harmless, but if you think about it, a few decades ago doctors actually prescribed cigarette smoking because they were lied to by tobacco companies.

That's what cell phone companies do today.

EMF's are everywhere and they damage your health. They cause cancer, destroy your DNA, are the reason for brain tumors as well as many other things.

Stress and negative thinking

This is the final reason for disease I want to mention to you.

I am pretty sure you're aware of the fact that stress and negative thinking will get you in trouble. It has the most destructive impact on your immunse system, greater than the three other causes combined.

If you want to see it in action, notice how heavy and physically sick you feel after you argue with someone you love.

It's a very tangible, intense feeling, isn't it?

So, now that you know what causes diseases, I have a question for you. What are you going to do about the information just shared with you? Are you going to apply it, or ignore it? The choice is yours.

Osteoporosis: Causes And Remedies

Diseases of bones in women have become a major problem now-a-days. Previously, one out of every 10/12 women patients used to visit a doctor with problems of bones. And now this number has gone up to almost 5/6 times. But why? There are several reasons for that. One of the problems of bones with which most of the women go to a doctor is osteoporosis. At present, worldwide, 1 out of every 3 women going to a doctor with bone-problems, is suffering from osteoporosis.

Causes

Osteoporosis starts when the amount of the constituent of bones decreases or the density of the constituent decreases. Generally, women, who have crossed the age of 40-45 years, suffer from this problem. Sometimes, the symptoms of this disease cannot be observed from outside. One can know about the disease only when there is a fracture of bones in the spine or hip joint or wrist joint due to a minor injury and in the X-ray, reduced density of the bones from the normal value is noticed.

Due to osteoporosis the amount of calcium in the bones decreases, as a result of which the bones become brittle. So they can break even due to a very minor injury. We, generally, know that bones can break when one falls down or meets an accident. But even if none of the above happens, bones may break suddenly and silently due to osteoporosis.

The structure and strength of bones depend mainly on calcium, particularly, calcium phosphate, vitamin D and other constituents like magnesium, carbonate, fluoride, chloride, citrate, etc. Bones may decay due to lack of any one of these. All these ingredients reach our bones with the help of blood circulation. But in those regions where the blood circulation is less or the muscle function is low, there the density and strength of the bones decrease and this also may result in osteoporosis.

The strength of a bone does not depend only on the amount or density of its constituents, but also on the movement and activity of the muscles and joints around it. If a person loses his/her ability to walk or move or is having a plaster surrounding any part of the body for a long time, then also osteoporosis may occur due to reduced blood circulation resulting in lack of required ingredients of the bones in that region.

Another major reason for this disease, in case of women, is menopause. Because, during this time, a lack of the hormone estrogen occurs in the body. A function of this hormone is to deposit calcium, the most important constituent of bones. Lack of this hormone causes lack of calcium in an woman's body. This is why women are more prone to osteoporosis than the men. Those women, who suffer menopause before the age of 40 years due to hysterectomy or surgical elimination of the uterus or pre-matured menopause at an early age, may also develop the disease.

Why is this disease becoming so widespread?

There are several reasons for the widespread attack of this disease. Now-a-days, the food habit of the women is inviting the disease very easily. Insufficient intake of calcium-rich foods is responsible for this. In this context, it is important to know that the maximum deposition of calcium in the body takes place up to 30 years of age. So, during this time, it is essential to take calcium-rich foods like milk, curd, fish, vegetables, the white portion of egg, etc. It is to be remembered that once an woman crosses 30 years, no matter how much she eats calcium-rich foods, the deposition of calcium in the body takes place in low amount. Now-a-days, in an attempt to attain zero-figure, the teenagers draw several restrictions on foods. As a result, along with other important minerals, the storage of calcium also becomes low. Due to this, the possibility of osteoporosis increases with age. Apart from these, it is dangerous to work, standing or sitting in a particular posture, for a long time. Drinking of alcohol and smoking are also dangerous for this disease. Now-a-days, there are increased cases of hysterectomy or early menopause and hence, increased cases of osteoporosis also.

What to do?

All females should eat calcium-rich foods right from their childhood. One should keep away from alcohol and smoking. One should walk daily for at least half an hour. Idle lifestyle increases the possibility of this disease. Damp, congested environment favours prolonged and increased suffering. So it is important to avoid such environment.

It is seen that there is a common practice among women to buy calcium tablets from the medicine shops and take them without any medical advice. This practice should be avoided. It is prudent to have calcium tablets only on the advice of a doctor, otherwise not.

If osteoporosis has occurred due to lack of estrogen, then, consulting a doctor, one may go for estrogen replacement therapy.

Once the age of 40 is crossed, it is important to check the amount of calcium in the bones by doing Dexa Scan.

Swine Flu: Causes, Symptoms and Prevention

Swine flu is a highly infectious disease of the respiratory system which is common among pigs, thereby giving it the name " flu". The problem for us is that the flu does not remain confined to pigs alone and can be transmitted to humans. To add to our woes, flu is highly contagious due to which it can become pandemic in no time at all.

Causes of swine flu

Flu in humans is caused by the spread of H1N1 virus.

People who stay in close contact with pigs wither due to professional requirements (working at animal farms, pig breeding farms, etc.) or by choice (have pigs as pets or touch and/or stroke them at petting fairs and zoos) can get infected by the flu virus.

The strains of H1N1 virus can enter the body either by inhaling them directly or indirectly (touching surfaces and objects contaminated by the touch of a person carrying the H1N1 virus or droplet infection caused by inhaling the strains of the virus when an infected person sneezes or coughs).

Symptoms of swine flu

The symptoms of swine flu can take 3-5 days to appear completely, after inhaling the strains of H1N1 virus. The symptoms also show a marked variation in children and adults.

Swine flu symptoms in children

· Sore throat

· Uneasiness while drawing in breath

· Color of skin changing to grayish blue

· Lack of thirst

· Nausea which might or might not be accompanied by vomiting

· Diarrhea

· Fainting or not getting up from sleep

· Body ache, and general flu like symptoms

· A fever which subsides initially but then reoccurs with severe respiratory problems

Swine flu symptoms in adults

Symptoms of flu in adults are less pronounced as compared to children though that should not be taken to mean that they can be taken lightly.

· Sore throat

· Breathlessness and difficulty in breathing

· Uneasiness and pain in the chest and abdomen

· Nausea and vomiting

· Diarrhea

· Body ache

· Flu like symptoms and fever recurring after subsiding once with a very bad throat and complications of the respiratory tract.

How to prevent swine flu?

Since flu is a highly infectious disease, it is necessary to take prevent swine flu to keep the deadly virus at bay. Here is a list of some simple do's and don'ts which will help you prevent swine flu and keep yourself and others in the family safe:

Step # I: Segregate the person carrying the swine flu virus

· Allot the person carrying the virus a separate area in the home which should, preferably, be well lit, well ventilated and have an attached wash room. As far as possible, try to keep the door to this room closed.

· Ask the infected person to stay indoors and avoid venturing outside the home for fear of passing off the infection to others. Going out should be avoided till it is absolutely necessary to do so (like visiting the doctor).

· Ask the infected person to wear a surgical mask when he is in the common area of the house to avoid droplet infection.

Step #II: Protecting others in the family from swine flu

· Discourage visitors and ask them to inquire about the infected person's well-being over a phone call if they must do so.

· Take special care to keep any pregnant women from coming in contact with a person carrying the swine flu virus because they are at a higher risk of getting infected.

· Anyone who visits the room of the infected person must wash his hands with soap immediately even if he has not touched the patient because he might have touched objects which have been touched by the latter.

Step #III: Preventive measures for the caregiver

· Try avoiding coming close to the infected person's face.

· If a child in the family has been infected, hold him in a matter so that his chin rests on the shoulder to avoid face to face contact with him.

· Wash the hands thoroughly very time after visiting the infected person's room or handling his laundry, clothing, etc.

· Take preventive medicines if required after consulting your doctor to prevent infection.

Step #IV: Handling infected person's laundry, etc.

The caretaker has to exercise due caution while handling infected person's laundry and other waste to prevent infection from spreading.

· Do not hold the patient's clothes, laundry, etc. close to the chest and wash your hands after touching any of his items.

· Wash the patient's clothes, utensils, towels, bed linen, etc. separately, preferably using warm water.

· Clean all items that might have been contaminated by his touch like the taps in his wash room, the remote control to his television, the door knobs and handles, etc. at least once a day with an alcohol based disinfectant.

Following these simple instructions can help you prevent infection from spreading.

Steatohepatitis Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options

Steotohepatitis is the inflammation of the liver due to the over accumulation of fat in the liver. This disease is also known as the fatty liver acid disease and is common amongst alcoholics. It is also frequently observed among obese persons and those who have diabetes and other metabolic syndromes. The accumulation of fat in the liver is caused by drinking too much alcohol and eating too much fatty foods. However, there are also cases where a person who is diagnosed with steotohepatitis has not consumed a lot of alcohol or fat laden food, and who is neither obese nor diabetic. There are two types of steatohepatitis, namely alcoholic steatohepatitis and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.

Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis

Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis or NASH is a rare disease because while most people have fat in their liver, most do not show signs of their liver swelling, and yet in certain individuals the fat causes the liver to swell. The reason why this happens is still unknown, but some doctors theorized that this may be due to the genetic makeup or that the person is diabetic or obese. Another possible cause may be high cholesterol levels or other metabolic problems. Most people suffering from NASH are between 40 and 50 years old, but there are cases where kids are diagnosed with NASH.

Unfortunately, there is no specific way to diagnose NASH. To know whether a person has NASH, he has to go to a doctor or a specialist to undergo an abdominal ultrasound, a scan, a MRI or even a biopsy. The symptoms can only be seen when the disease is already in advanced stages. Also, NASH can progress and develop into cirrhosis or fibrosis in the liver which is life threatening and irreversible. So, it is better to detect the disease in earlier stages so it can be treated immediately, so that further advancement of the disease can be avoided.

Alcoholic Steatohepatitis

Alcoholic steatohepatitis is a liver disease caused by too much consumption of alcohol. The alcohol kills the cells in the liver thereby destroying the function of the liver as well. It is common among people who drink everyday for five years or longer. The kind of alcohol is irrelevant; instead the purity of alcohol is the culprit. Actually a 60 to 80 ml of pure alcohol per day for men and 40 to 50 ml of pure alcohol per day for women is toxic to the body. Also more women develop alcoholic steatohepatits than men.

There are three types of alcoholic steatohepatitis. The first type is alcoholic fatty liver, where the liver is enlarged, firm and has turned into a pale yellow color. The second type is alcoholic hepatitis, where fibrosis is observed in the liver. There is also an inflammation caused by the hepatitis virus and the liver feels tender to the touch. The third type is alcoholic cirrhosis, the end stage liver disease where lumps have formed in the liver so that is can no longer function normally. Most people suffering from alcoholic cirrhosis have a life expectancy of only one to three years.

Steatohepatitis Symptoms

People suffering from non-alcoholic steatohepatitis can exhibit symptoms like jaundice or yellowing of the skin. They can also exhibit easy bruising, swelling of the lower abdomen, itching skin, poor memory or confusion and vomiting of blood. However, these symptoms can only be observed when NASH is already in its advanced stage.

On the other hand, a person with alcoholic steatohepatitis also exhibits nausea, vomiting, jaundice, swelling and tenderness in the abdomen. However symptoms like fever and encephalopathy is unique to alcoholic steatohepatitis. Encephalopathy is a condition where a person experience confusion, altered consciousness and even coma. Also steatohepatitits can increase blood pressure which may cause sudden bleeding. This can be life threatening when not diagnosed immediately.

Steatohepatitis Grading

Steatohepatits has three grades: mild, moderate and severe. It is graded according to the amount of fat in a single cell. When the accumulation of fat in the cell is big enough to distort the cytoplasm and the nucleus, the event is called macro-vesicular steatosis, while the opposite is called micro-vesicular steatosis. Mild grade steatohepatitis is characterized by the presence of macro-vesicular steatosis. Also the hepatocyte - the liver cell, exhibits occasional swelling. Moderate grade on the other hand, has micro-vesicular and macro-vesicular steatosis. And the hepatocyte exhibits obvious swelling which means the liver is inflamed. In the severe grade, both micro-vesicular and macro-vesicular steatosis is present in more than 66% of the liver cells. Swelling hepatocyte is dominant and the liver exhibits fibrosis and chronic inflammation.

Steatohepatitis Treatment Options

As of now, there is still no definitive treatment for steatohepatitis. Most treatment includes dieting, exercise and lifestyle changes. For non-alcoholic steatohepatitis caused by obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, high pressure and other metabolic syndrome, the treatment is done by curing the underlying disease. If a person is obese or has high cholesterol, that person is treated with a diet regime and an exercise program. The treatment is designed to lower the fat in the liver and thereby eliminating steatohepatitis. To hasten the removal of fat in the liver, antiglycemic drugs can also be used. NASH is difficult to diagnose and if not treated immediately, can develop into cirrhosis.

The first treatment for alcoholic steatohepatitis is the elimination of alcohol consumption. Most patients diagnosed with alcoholic steatohepatitis are just in the early stage so it is easy to treat. However, if the patient is already in the advanced stage there are no drugs that can cure the disease. Liver transplant is the last treatment option for those who are already in the end stage.

The 5 Most Common Causes of Thyroid Problems

It is always important to take care of our body to prevent any kind of problems or disease from happening. But to really prevent diseases from occurring, it is also important to know what causes these diseases in order for us to properly care for our body. Without knowing the cause, it will be hard for us to understand how these problems start and how we can best avoid them.

One of the most difficult medical problems to detect and understand are thyroid problems. This is because thyroid conditions and diseases have overlapping causes and symptoms. Some disease even causes some of the thyroid conditions that people experience. Doctors have yet to really pinpoint the root cause of these conditions, but there are several factors that cause them. We'll be discussing the five (5) most common causes for thyroid problems.

1. Iodine Deficiency - The most common cause that is associated with thyroid diseases is iodine deficiency. This is because iodine plays an important role in the production of thyroid hormones. A lack or excess of iodine in the body may cause problems with the thyroid gland.

2. Autoimmune Disease - Another common cause of thyroid problems are autoimmune disease. This is a disease wherein our antibodies attack the thyroid gland. This causes the thyroid to either produce more thyroid hormones or less of it. Hashimoto's Disease and Graves' Disease are the autoimmune disease that causes thyroid problems.

Understanding Kidney Stone Causes

Substances in the kidney are normally excreted through urination. However, the reduced volume of urine and other factors cause these substances to stick together and turn into a stone. Below is a list of the most identified causes relating to this condition.

Low water intake. When you do not drink enough water, substances in the kidney may not be flushed out completely.Poor diet. Anti-inflammatory and narcotics may be prescribed to alleviate the pain. Other medications may also be required to speed up the passage of kidney stone. For kidney stones that will not exit on their own, a medical procedure known as lithotripsy may be necessary. This is done by using shock waves to disintegrate them into smaller pieces.

Prevention

Prevention is always better than cure. There are basically 3 ways to keep them from forming drinking plenty of water, low oxalate diet, and regular exercise. It should be noted however, that not all types of fluid will do the work. Fruit juices, sodas, and iced teas may make the condition worse and exacerbate the problem.
