Car sickness is prevalent among all age groups and it needs to be attended to make sure your outing remains a pleasant one. Symptoms vary from mild to severe however in most cases when the car ride comes to an end the symptoms tends to perish. Here are some effective ways to counter car sickness before and during car travel.
• Try peppermint candies. Yes. Peppermint contains methanol which acts as a vital ingredient to soothe your stomach. Also, consuming peppermint tea as you begin a journey would effectively counter the feeling of nausea.
• Consume light foods. Foods like crackers, bread when consumed in small quantities helps reduce salivation and also fluids in stomach thereby negating the feeling of nausea.
• Eat Olives. Olives contain tannins that helps reduce salivation a great deal and dry mouth. This is good for you because high salivation is a symptom for motion sickness.
• Consume water and other fluids. Drink lots of fluids but be mindful not to consume dairy products immediately before and during journey. Be cautious about drinking caffeinated products and alcohol as they tend to dehydrate the body.
• Rest a lot. Dizziness and nausea can surface if you have improper sleep so make sure you are well rested before travelling. When symptoms do appear rest and relax by stationing your head against the back seat, doing so would mitigate the extent of motion sickness.
• Prefer night travel. It is agreed that the movements will be less noticeable during nights and hence it should be preferred as the eyes cannot see things in their entirety and so would not send conflicting signals to the central nervous system thereby reducing the chance for symptoms to appear.
• Try driving yourself. As a driver, you tend to concentrate more on the driving than on thinking a great deal about motion sickness and hence drivers are often better positioned to combat feeling sick when being in a car.
• Don't think of being sick. Thinking of sickness only spurts your anxiety levels and surely the symptoms grow rampantly. Don't be preoccupied of feeling sick and try and engage people around you in talking or doing some activity that takes your mind off it.
• Applying ice packs. Ice packs or anything cold would subside the symptoms of motions sickness specially when applied to eyes or neck. When you stop for a while you might as well try to immerse your feet in cold water. This provides relief and weakens the feeling of nausea.
• See a doctor. Prior to long journeys, it is advisable to consult a doctor if you feel motion sickness would worry you. The doctor would address your needs in a customized manner and help you with suggestions to overcome motion sickness.
