The Dangerous Side Effects of Laxative Abuse

Laxative Abuse is a serious issue that effects a very small population of people. Many people that participate in laxative abuse usually suffer from the disease Bulimia. Another group of people that are at risk of abusing Laxatives are people that are trying to lose weight quickly.

The reason laxatives should be used responsibly is due to the stress it puts on your body's organs forcing the kidneys and intestines to push water and waste out of your body. Another result of frequent urination and discretion is the loss of essential minerals like potassium, sodium and magnesium. The lowering of these minerals in the body can result in an electrolyte imbalance that is not only harmful but leads to muscle pain, spasms, irregular heartbeat and possibly death.

The deadly myth of using Laxatives is that if a laxative can be used after binging preventing the body's consumption of calories. This reason this theory does not work is by the time the laxative takes effect, the food is already in the large intestines and all calories and nutrients have already been processed into the body.

Common Side Effects of Laxative Abuse:

Laxative dependency - resulting in the body needing a greater dose of laxatives for the body to produce bowel movements.Gastrointestinal Tract Damage - leading to long-term digestion problemsImmune System Shutdown - resulting in a higher chance to become sick.Severe Hydration- resulting in cells and tissues not rehydrating fast enough by drinking water leading to organ damage and possibly death.Bowel Weakness - the inability for a person to maintain their bowels and possibly colon failure.

Laxative Abuse symptoms:

TremorsDehydrationWeaknessNauseaWater retentionColon infectionBlurry visionSevere abdominal painChronic DiarrheaGasBloatingElectrolyte DisturbancesChronic ConstipationBowel tumorsIrregular heartbeatKidney damageOrgan damageColon failureDeath

As you can see most of the symptoms and side effects of Laxative abuse have to do with the person failing to replenish water back into the body. The reason for this goes back to why people use laxatives to lose weight. The truth is that using laxatives simply removes water weight from the body and does actually aid in blocking the consumption of calories. Laxatives are simply made to assist in the production of bowel movements.

In conclusion, as a diet solution laxatives will work if you have a you a few inches around the waste you want to lose temporarily, but is not healthy for a long term weight loss solution. The only real way to lose weight for the long term and to keep it off is to exercise regularly and partake in a healthy diet.
